The Global Mānuka Honey Divide: Why Some Countries Love It More Than Others

At Mānuka Lab, we were curious to see just how much the world searches for Mānuka honey, and where that interest is strongest.

So we carried out a global study using real search data to understand how curiosity about Mānuka honey varies between countries and cultures.

The results tell a fascinating story about how people around the world think about natural health and wellness.

Methodology

Our study looked at global search activity for “Mānuka honey” across 50 countries, using data from Ahrefs API (October 2025).

To make things fair, we compared both total search volume and per-capita interest, the number of searches per 100,000 people.

New Zealand Leads the World

It’s no surprise that New Zealand, where Mānuka honey originates, came out on top. New Zealanders search for Mānuka honey 82 times per 100,000 people each month, showing strong national pride and awareness of their most famous natural product.

Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States follow closely behind, all English-speaking nations with well-established wellness cultures and familiarity with Mānuka honey’s benefits.

English-Speaking Countries Show the Highest Interest

When we looked at the data by region, a clear pattern emerged.

English-speaking countries - the Anglosphere - searched for Mānuka honey around 13 times more often per person than Continental European countries.

Region

Average Monthly Searches (Per 100k People)

Anglosphere (NZ, AU, UK, IE, US, CA)

56.6

Continental Europe (DE, FR, IT, NL)

4.4

Asia (Large Markets)

0.8

This pattern highlights how language and cultural familiarity can shape how people discover natural products online.

Europe’s Modest Curiosity

Even though Mānuka honey is widely available across Europe, search activity there remains relatively low. For example, Germany records around 2.3 searches per 100,000 people, compared with 65.7 in the UK, a difference of almost 30 times.

This may reflect different health habits and trust in traditional remedies. In parts of Europe, people often rely more on herbal medicines or pharmacy-led health advice, while English-speaking consumers tend to explore natural wellness products independently.

Asia’s Emerging Awareness

In large Asian markets such as India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, search volumes are much lower, suggesting that Mānuka honey is still a niche topic of interest. That’s likely due to language, price, and the availability of local honey varieties. But awareness is growing steadily as more people learn about Mānuka’s natural properties and origins in New Zealand’s native forests.

Why Interest Differs So Widely

Our findings suggest several possible explanations for the global differences:

1. Language and Awareness

Most educational content and marketing about Mānuka honey is published in English. This means that consumers in English-speaking countries are far more likely to encounter accurate, science-backed information online.

2. Healthcare and Lifestyle

Countries with more individual or private healthcare systems often see stronger interest in self-directed wellness. In regions with public healthcare, people may rely more on traditional or prescribed treatments.

3. Culture and Habits

English-speaking countries have a well-developed “wellness culture”, from nutrition blogs to social media influencers, where natural remedies like Mānuka honey are part of everyday conversation.

4. Local Alternatives

In many parts of the world, people already use their own traditional honey types or herbal products for similar purposes, which naturally influences search interest.

What It Tells Us About Wellness Culture

What stands out most from this study is how interest in natural products reflects cultural habits, not just availability.

In countries where people are more accustomed to researching natural remedies or taking a hands-on approach to health, Mānuka honey is already a familiar name. Elsewhere, people may simply express their wellness interests differently, through other foods, traditions, or remedies.

At Mānuka Lab, we see this as a reminder that curiosity about health is universal, even if it takes different forms around the world. Whether you’re in New Zealand or Norway, the instinct to seek out natural goodness connects us all.
